Purpose As an introductory course, Management Principles and Practices covers a broad array of concepts from the field of management. In addition to gaining a foundational understanding of these ideas, students are also expected to develop skills related to applying management concepts to solving real-world business problems. This is an important element in developing your managerial skills. The purpose of the term paper is to • Analyze the internal and external environment of a business and identify the management concepts most relevant to the issues facing the company • Locate and correctly reference secondary sources related to the selected organization and important aspects of the situation the company faces • Demonstrate the ability to generate feasible solutions to the company’s issues and to select the solution that best resolves the problems, based on the information available • Provide students with an opportunity to develop their written communication skills • Provide students with an opportunity to reflect on how ideas from the field of management fit with their personal perspective Overview Two company case articles are posted in the Term Paper folder in the Assignments section on Blackboard. Choose one of these tw0 articles to use as the focus of your term paper. When making your selection, consider what topics from our course are most applicable to the situation facing each company and which of these scenarios is most interesting to you. Begin with some preliminary research about the organization and the industry in which the company competes. Your research should go beyond the company’s website and instead include information from sources like Canadian Business, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Report on Business, MGMT 2130-002/003 F20 Term Paper Assignment 2 Bloomberg Businessweek, The Economist, and other reputable publications. Use the information from the article along with your preliminary research to identify the primary issue facing your selected organization, as well as the course topics that will be more relevant for analyzing and resolving this issue. For example, you may identify that the business is struggling with its organizational structure and use course material and your secondary research on various types of organizational structures to work toward a recommendation for this company. See below for suggested content for your paper. Do not use commercial websites (other than the company website) or videos as sources for this paper. DO NOT USE PESTI or SWOT analyses done by others. You are to do your own analysis! Format Your paper will be written using the Word template available on Blackboard, which follows the rules of the 7th edition APA Manual (note that you will use 12-point Times New Roman font). You are to follow the 7th edition of APA for correct referencing of your secondary research (in-text citations and reference page entries). Use language and a writing style appropriate for a business audience (e.g., no contractions, professional tone – refer to the text within the template for further details). Ensure your language default in Word is set to ‘English – Canada’ so spell check will consider Canadian spelling. You must include appropriate headings within your paper – consider the headings in points 1 through 4 in the “Suggested Content for Written Report” section of this assignment guide and include subheadings as needed. Papers without appropriate headings will receive up to a 10% penalty. Papers must be no longer than eight pages in length. This eight-page limit does not include title page and reference page. A 5% penalty applies for each ½ page (or portion thereof) over the eight-page limit (e.g., a 10.5 page paper will receive a 25% penalty). Submission Papers are due by the beginning of class on November 24. You are to upload your Word document to the Term Paper folder in the Assignments section on Blackboard. Your uploaded paper will be submitted to ‘Safe Assign’, which is an online database used at MRU to provide feedback to students and faculty regarding plagiarism. You are encouraged to upload a draft of your completed paper prior to the deadline, so you will receive feedback about possible plagiarism within your paper (you have three upload opportunities, so you may upload two drafts for feedback about possible plagiarism). The draft submission(s) will be for your feedback only (only the ‘final’ submission is for grading by me), and this will allow you to make whatever changes are needed to help ensure there is no plagiarism in your paper.
