Choose at least two literary texts (2 short stories, set of 2-4 poems/songs, two comic books/graphic novels, or two plays) and discuss how the texts explore significant issues related to the American identity. You should provide a critical examination of the texts, written in the third person, which identifies the main themes of the texts and makes an assertion about whether or not the themes are progressive or traditional, accurate or inaccurate, in regard to the American identity. For example, you could write an essay on a set of 2-4 poems by Langston Hughes that focuses on how he communicates the themes of race, equality, self-worth in America. Specific details from the primary texts are essential to support your claim as well as information take from secondary sources that offers insight into the texts. Your secondary sources could consist of literary criticism specifically on the texts, as well as information related to the race, race relations, the Harlem Renaissance, etc. Whatever primary texts you choose, be sure to think about when the texts were created and how the elements of literature contribute to our understanding of the text’s place in a discussion about American identity.
