After reading the three Code of Ethics, I have chosen principle 1: Educators nurture the intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and civic potential of each student. This principle states that “Educators promote growth in all students through the integration of intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and civic learning.” They believe that each child should inherent dignity and respect from educators, help them value their own identity and cultural heritage, practice civic and social responsibilities, connect and reflect their own learning through life experiences, and they encourage the students to think in diverse ways to solve solutions all while demonstrating their abilities and learning of the issue. This principle means a lot to me and I hope teachers are obliging to it. Growing up, I had a very difficult time learning in school; math and English were my hardest subjects. In fact, I hated school because every time I would try my hardest I would fail. This is why I picked up sports because they were easy to learn and I always had fun. Now being an adult and looking back into my educational past, I question a lot of things. Still to this day I question why I was taught the same way as all the other students just slower. I clearly had a learning disability that made me different than the rest of the kids so why wasn’t their any other way to teach the curriculum? Some of my teachers use to go out of their way to help me learn in different ways but some left me to suffer. This is why I find this principle so important for my responsibilities as a practitioner because I don’t want to my students to feel like they are a failure like I once did. I will become an teacher who educates my students in all sorts of ways because every single child learns differently. All of my lesson plans will incorporate all different types of learning activities so that I know, their family knows, and they know what works for them the best! I will take them on field trips so that they can reflect on what they learned inside the classroom and connect it to their own life experiences! Yes, all of the principles have a great importance to them but this principle will always hold a special place in my heart!

After reading the three Code of Ethics documents one principle that stood out to me was Principle Number 5 from the New York State Code of Ethics. This principle states that educators collaborate with parents, and community building trust and respecting confidentiality. Many educators partner with parents and other members of the community to enhance student learning. They also recognize how cultural things such as heritage, gender and family have a big part in shaping experience and learning for the student.

When I read this one of the main responsibilities I believe I would have as an educator was to get to know each and every one of my students and all of the specific qualities and learning behaviors that they have. I as an educator would know all of the private natures of a student and their families and only use this information for their best interest. I would never let other parents or students know about private information I may know about another student. All of their learning abilities and specific family life would remain confidential. While each and every one of my students will act and be different, I want to make sure in my classroom that it is known to both the student and parents that each child will get a fair opportunity in my classroom to become the best they can be no matter their heritage or gender. The goal is to work with each parent to help their children get the absolute most that they can from my class. An action that I would take to ensure that I will uphold this principle is to hold parent-teacher conferences with each students parents. At this conference I will break down the child’s learning to the parents. If a child is excelling I will let the parent know different ways we can challenge their child and if a child is struggling I would also let the parents know and hopefully come up with some useful ways to help the child understand the lessons being presented in the class better. Of course this would all be kept private within each family. The ultimate goal for me is to make sure that the parent and student know that all of us together are a team and are working together to help the child succeed not only in the classroom but in their feature endeavors as well.
