In 1846, Charles Baudelaire wrote, “Romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor in exact truth, but in a way of feeling.”
We can understand the main ideas behind Romanticism by focusing on the 5 “I’s” .
Imagination: was emphasized over “reason.” This was a reaction against the Neoclassical focus on rationalism. Imagination was considered necessary for creating all art.
Intuition: Romantic artists believed feeling and instincts were more important than reason – value is placed on strong emotion and art was responsible for evoking that emotion.
Idealism: The artist would emphasize the spirit, the mind, or language over matter – they believed they could perfect the forms they created.
Inspiration – The Romantic artist was an “inspired creator” rather than a “technical master.” What this means is “going with the moment” or being spontaneous, rather than “getting it precise.”
Individuality – Romantics celebrated the individual. So individualism in artistic styles was common. While the philosophies are the same, the representation can be crafted in a unique manner.
The Realist movement eventually replaced Romanticism in French art. It flourished from about 1840 until the late nineteenth century. Its purpose was to convey a truthful and objective vision of contemporary life. Realist artists rejected the exotic and imaginative themes central to Romanticism. They also rejected the notion of idealizing their subject. They only painted things they saw and experienced and they depicted their subjects in a realistic “true to life” manner.
Romanticism and Realism are interesting movements to compare; despite the distinctive methods of depiction, many compositions from both styles sought to shed light on the disadvantaged and marginalized sectors of society.
For your discussion post, select one of the paintings below to carefully examine and analyze. In your post, explain how the painting represents its respective style of either Romanticism or Realism, and explain the sociopolitical message. Conclude your post with a personal response to the composition (Consider the following questions: Did the composition successfully relay the message? How do these works relate to images we see today? How does censorship affect the message of an artwork?)
