This deliverable supports the course objective to discuss a manager’s responsibility and identify the traits of an effective leader.

For this short writing assignment, you will conduct an interview with a manager. According to your textbook, “a manager is responsible for achieving organizational objectives through efficient and effective utilization of resources” (Lussier, 2021, p. 3). The individual whom you interview can be a manager at a small or large organization; the individual can be a family member, neighbor, friend, mentor, or current/former supervisor. You should choose to interview someone who has served as a manager for at least two years. To get started: Contact your manager of choice to determine if they’re available and willing to meet with you for 30-60 minutes, so that you can conduct the required interview. After you receive confirmation, begin to prepare for the interview, i.e., write out the questions that you need (and want) to ask for the purposes of this assignment (and your professional development!). You should conduct the interview in person, via phone, or via Skype or Zoom or some other video conferencing software. You should avoid conducting the interview via e-mail only.

The interview will have two parts:

In part 1, you will choose ONE (only one!) of the following topics, and discuss with the manager how they:

TOPIC 1: Promotes ethical behavior,
TOPIC 2: Focuses on inclusion,
TOPIC 3: Solves problems AND makes decisions,
TOPIC 4: Facilitates strategic AND operational planning, OR
TOPIC 5: Manages change
In part 2, you will ask the manager for advice, relative to their management experiences:

“What can I do in college to prepare me to think and act like a manager?”
After your interview: Submit a two-page paper (no more than two pages, please!).

This assignment should be typed, 11-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and no more than two pages.

Remember, plagiarism is claiming work as your own that you have copied from another person, whether that other person knows about it or not. This includes copying from web sites without proper source citation and using papers prepared by current or past students. Then, explain why the manager does what they do, e.g., why does the manager solve problems and make decisions in this way?
Finally, provide at least two concrete, specific examples to support your explanation.
Management Advice (approximately 2-3 paragraphs):

First, explain the advice that the manager offered to you, in terms of what you can do in college to prepare to think and act like a manager, e.g., the manager might tell you to get involved, so explain the manager’s advice. If the manager gives you advice for something you can do in a future job, please ask the manager for advice specifically for what you can do in college.
Then, provide at least two concrete, specific examples of ways you can implement the advice in college. In fact, I suggest that you think about this part of the assignment as a road map for what you can actually do now. The more specific the plan, the more likely you will be able to act.

Discuss the most important lesson you learned from your interview with the manager that you will take with you into the professional workplace.
