Purpose and Overview:
A literature review summarizes past research by drawing overall conclusions from many separate studies that are believed to address a related hypothesis/specific topic. The importance of the literature review is that it should highlight important issues that research has left unresolved. A review of this type is intended to critically examine existing knowledge and direct your research. In other words, you will be summarizing and drawing conclusions about your research findings. At the same time, you will examine the bias or rhetorical agenda of each source. For example, do scholars agree or disagree on a particular point? Did other sources yield different results?
As you evaluate or write a literature review, ask yourself:
1. What is the research topic? What is the purpose of this study?
2. Is/Are the research question (s) / hypothesis clearly presented?
3. How is the literature review organized: chronologically or thematically?
4. Are the key terms defined and explained properly?
5. Does this literature review have an introduction, body, and conclusion?
6. Is there a gap that’s clearly presented towards the end of the literature review?
7. Are references and sources reliable? What are the types of references used in these studies?
Use the sources you summarized and evaluated in your annotated bibliography and/or more to write the literature review section of your research paper as well as the Reference List (please refer to owl.english.purdue.edu).
The literature review section of your paper can further be divided into three parts:
• INTRODUCTION: This is the introduction to the literature review and to the whole paper. It has the title “Introduction”.
This is where:
Topic is introduced
Purpose of the study is stated
Explains why topic was chosen
Topic importance is emphasized
Definitions/Constructs are explained
Shows what is and is not covered in the literature review
Thesis statement clearly addresses the topic of the paper
• BODY: This is the part titled “Literature Review” (There might be sub-titles here according to themes).
Sources are summarized, critiqued, and linked together thematically or chronologically.
Your literature review should answer the following questions:
1. What has been published/investigated/proven about the topic/your area of interest?
2. What are the existing theories and/or key concepts in your field/topic of interest?
3. What are the relationships between these concepts/theories?
4. What are the inconsistencies/problems with the studies in your field of interest? (What evidence is lacking, inconclusive, contradictory or too limited?/ What research designs or methods seem unsatisfactory?/ What theories need to be (further) tested?
• CONCLUSION: This part has a title. It actually follows the summary and critique of the sources.
This is where:
Gap in the literature is identified
The reason the research problem should be further investigated is stated/The contribution of the present study is stated
Research question is clearly answered
Conclusions are made

Recommendations are made
