Extra Credit Nonverbal Video Paper
What you’ll need:
For this extra credit opportunity you’ll need to watch the Secrets of Body Language documentary at the following link: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/secrets-of-body-language/ (Links to an external site.). The documentary itself is about an hour and a half long, but for this assignment you only have to watch from 3:20-25:30. You are more than welcome to watch the entire thing, but this assignment will only ask you to reflect on that 22 minute section.
What it’s about:
You’ll be writing a paper reflecting on the arguments and information presented in the documentary (between 3:20-25:30). The video has a cast of “nonverbal experts” that continuously comment on what different body gestures and movements say or mean, and how that reflects on the people themselves. What you’ll be doing, given your knowledge of nonverbals from this class (i.e., from lecture, the textbook, and discussion), is write about how accurate you feel the conclusions were that these “experts” were making, and what you felt about the documentary overall. You may find it helpful to briefly review your notes and the chapter on nonverbal communication for this assignment.
Because this is a shorter assignment, you are not expected to do a detailed dissection of every part of this documentary. Instead, share your overall impression of the video (e.g., did you think it was good, bad, OK, misinforming, accurate, etc.) and then give two to three specific examples of why you feel that way about the video overall. For example, if you thought the video was good and accurate, you would likely provide some examples of what they got right (again, based on what we’ve covered in class); or if you thought it was bad and inaccurate, you would likely provide some examples of what they got wrong; or if you were undecided, you might provide some examples of what they got right and of what they got wrong. Just make sure you provide detailed examples for why you feel the way you do about the documentary. One way to structure this could be to spend one paragraph sharing your impressions, a paragraph discussing your first example, a paragraph discussing your second example, and a final paragraph discussing your last example; however, there is no set expectation for paper structure.
Paper must be 2 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point, Times New Romans (note: a page and one sentence is not two pages)
Make sure to include everything discussed in the above section (i.e., your impression of the documentary, and two to three specific examples of why)
You do not need to use proper APA style referencing, but do make sure that you at least informally state where you get your info (e.g., “in lecture we discussed posture”)
Please submit the paper to Canvas by the deadline stated
This will be worth 5 extra credit points
