Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence
As you’ve seen in this text, sociologists do research on all kinds of topics. Sometimes they become interested in a particular social problem because of their personal experience with it. This is how it was for sociologist Kathleen Ferraro. In the next Spotlight on Social Research (Links to an external site.), she shares her experiences with intimate partner violence (Links to an external site.)—physical, emotional, or sexual abuse within a relationship.

Intimate Partner Violence

KATHLEEN FERRARO, Director of Training and Curriculum af the Family Violence Institute at Northern Arizona University, wanted to be a sociologist from the time she was 12. She never imagined, though, that her research would focus on “intimate partner violence” because she never knew that this existed. Here is what she wrote for you.

I found out about “intimate partner violence” at age 23 when I married my first husband. He went to high school with me and came from a well-respected family. He was a naturalist and a bird-watcher, did not drink or use drugs, and showed no violent tendencies. After we exchanged vows, however, he changed almost immediately, displaying the “power and control” tactics that have become so well known today. He monitored my movements, eating, clothing, friends, money, makeup, and language. If I challenged his commands, he slapped or kicked me or pushed me down.

I left him on these occasions, staying with other graduate students at Arizona State University, but I had no way to understand what was happening. My husband always convinced me to return. He stalked and threatened to kill me, even in front of police officers, but my faculty mentor, Albert J. Mayer, and my friends hid me until my father-in-law came to take my husband back to our hometown on the other side of the country. I obtained a single-party, no-fault divorce and never saw him again.

These events took place in 1974 and 1975, before the battered women’s movement transformed public understanding of “domestic violence.” In a graduate class on social deviance, Erdwin Pfuhl required us to write a paper on a form of deviance with which we had personal experience. I could not think of anything. While I waited outside his office to ask for help, another woman struck up a conversation with me, and I learned that her boyfriend abused her. That was the moment that I began to think sociologically about my own experience. I discovered that there was a battered women’s shelter in my city, and I began to volunteer there and to interview staff members. This was the beginning of the battered women’s movement and the beginning of a lifetime of research, teaching, and activism for me. I joined with a group of people to establish another shelter, and that is where I conducted the interviews and ethnographic work for my dissertation, Battered Women and the Shelter Movement, and for the Social Problems article, “How Women Experience Battering: The Process of Victimization.”

The women taught me how difficult it is to make sense of the violence and emotional abuse that come from a person they love and believe loves them. The rationalizations the women used to understand what was happening to them were similar to those used by people who commit crimes, the “techniques of neutralization” described by Gresham Sykes and David Matza. For women at the shelter, these techniques included denial of victimization, denial of the victimizer, denial of injury, denial of options, appeal to higher loyalties, and the salvation ethic. Because of fear, lack of resources, and institutional failure to respond to battering, the women found escape from violent relationships to be difficult and precarious. Leaving an abuser does not necessarily end the violence—women are often at most risk during the time they are leaving the abuser.
