In this assignment,
you will develop a lengthier, more thoroughly-researched and explicitly-elaborated argument that will:
• Describe a specific problem,
• Analyze the nature (i.e., the causes, effects, and stakes) of that problem,
• Identify an appropriate, profession- or discipline-specific audience to address the problem, and
• Propose a feasible solution to the problem and/or weigh that solution against other possible solutions.
Whatever your approach, you will need to clearly identify the problem, provide clear evidence to support your
claim that the problem is, in fact, a problem (i.e., identify the stake of the problem) and analyze the causes and
effects of that problem. You must then locate a specific, formal audience whose job it is, you will argue, to
address the problem. Then you will propose a feasible solution to the problem. The key word here is feasible.
If the solution is too expensive, takes too much time and/or effort to implement, or is unlikely to be
implemented for some other reason—such as logistics, ethics, etc.—then it is not feasible.
Assignment Instructions
Before starting, read TMHG Chapter11, “Writing to Explain Causes and Effects,” and Chapter 12,
“Writing to Solve Problems.”
Write a 2,000 – 2,500 word research-based proposal that seeks to solve (or begin to solve) a specific problem in
a professional or career-specific context. Your essay should not merely be informational; by the end, you will
propose a unique, feasible solution that can be implemented by the professionals in your chosen field as to how
they should best work to solve (or at least begin to solve) the problem you identify.
**Note that some problems are too big to “solve” easily (and you might be oversimplifying them if you try
to); as such, identifying how to feasibly begin to solve a problem is also an acceptable goal for this paper.

Use a minimum of twelve (12) sources from the course library guide in your proposal to provide background
to the problem (including its causes and effects) and to support your proposed solution.
• At least eight (8) viewpoints sources relevant to the career field(s) key to your topic.
• At least four (4) contextualizing sources (data, statistics, etc.) relevant to your topic.

All evidence and QPS used must be attributed to an authoritative source recognized as both credible and relevant by
experts in the discipline or career field of your topic. As with A1 and A2, use the Library Guide as a starting point
for your research. The same standards for what constitutes reliable research sources will apply. To ensure a thorough
and balanced approach to your topic, in addition to the requirements listed above, you must obtain all evidence used
from the following resources:
• 4-5 sources from general informative databases / publications
§ Statistics, newspapers, general encyclopedias and handbooks, etc.
§ Opposing Viewpoints books series
§ Webpages, such as .gov or .org, whose reliability you can specifically demonstrate in your SP.
• 5-6 sources from research and/or subject specific databases / publications
§ Scholarly articles and trade publications
§ Field-specific encyclopedias and handbooks
§ An informational interview you personally conduct with a professional in the field you have chosen (i.e.,
not a friend or relative) for use as a viewpoints source only

• 3-4 multimedia sources✭✭, at least one of which must be integrated as a non-text element
§ Videos, images, graphs, charts, audio files (podcasts, radio programs), etc.
✭✭ As before, the non-text element could be a visual that helps readers enter your paper in the right frame of
mind, a sound or video recording that augments one of your main points, and so on. In all cases, this non-text
element must be fully integrated into your project with strong signal phrasing. It must engage with the text in
a way that is more than mere illustration of a point you’re making. In other words, it must serve a clear
rhetorical purpose and provide something integral to the overall effect of your claim and be accurately cited.
Use a variety of SP methods to integrate summary, paraphrase, and quotation in your paper, but note that no
more than 10% of it (200-250 words) should consist of directly quoted material. As usual in college-level
writing, all information from sources—whether quoted, paraphrased, or summarized, whether words or
images—must be cited. Keep in mind that it is your voice—not your sources’—that should be most
prominent in your writing.

Integrate your non-text element(s) completely with proper formatting.
