Short Stories
A&P, Drown, The Lesson, Two Kinds, and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven are modern coming of age stories narrated by young people. Write an essay in which you consider how their social and cultural experiences impact the realizations these characters have about their place in the world. How have their social and cultural experiences shaped their identities and their expectations? You may speculate about whether these characters would continue to be defined by the past (if they were real human beings).
You do not need to discuss all 5 stories, but you should use examples from at least 3 of the stories in your essay. You will probably need to quote from the story to provide support for your assertions, and you should use the shortened conventions for MLA citation. Use quotation marks around the author’s words and enclose the page number of our text in parentheses immediately after; no Works Cited page is required since we are all using the same book. Make sure that you introduce the quote so that your reader knows what the quote is illustrating.
