You will conduct a speech analysis of a speech. I have provided a group of approved speeches under”Speeches Approved for Speech Analysis” in your course content. You must choose one of these speeches and I encourage you to choose one that interests you. If you have a speech that you would like to choose but is not on the list then you will need to get approval from me. Please note that the speech should be contemporary. While many historical speeches are well-crafted, I want your analysis to be based on how we speak, present, and communicate today!!!! I may occasionally slip in a historical speech, but I have some specific ideas about that speeches’ value if I include it.
Your analysis should be in MLA format with a Works Cited. I am not asking you to do research on this speech. You should cite the speech as your source. The assignment should 10 point font 1 inch margins doublespaced. You will write 5 paragraphs….each paragraph should be about 5 to 7 sentences in length. Therefore, the expectation is that your analysis should be about 2 pages in length. However, the key here is to cover all the elements in the requirements below versus focusing on length. So it is possible to be shorter or longer, it depends on the content of the analysis.
First Paragraph: Introduction
1) Begin with an introductory line to gain the reader’s attention. Perhaps mentioning something of interest regarding the speaker, the context, the audience, or the theme of the speech.
2) Provide a thesis statement introducing the primary purpose of your paper, which should note the speech you chose.
3) Next, explain why you chose this speech to analyze. Perhaps incorporate thoughts such as the significance of the speech, or the interest you had in the speaker or subject matter.
4) Preview the points that will be covered in your paper.
Second Paragraph: Provide your overall impression of the speech and discuss the CONTENT of the speech. What was said? This paragraph might also include the CONTEXT element of the speech (i.e. time frame, audience, venue, purpose, subject matter, etc.). Think of this context as the historical importance of the speech, what was going on in the world that the speaker needed to address. What was the history that had happened relative to the topic the speaker is discussing? You should present your view of what worked well in the speech, as well as aspects of the speech that you did not like, remembering to state what about it you liked and what you did not like. It is appropriate to quote a favorite or interesting line, but please keep quotations to a minimum (only two per paper).
Third Paragraph: In this paragraph analyze the VERBAL DELIVERY. It is important to weave in terms of our textbook in your assessment. This is the place to discuss: How was it said. What language did the speaker use? How did the speaker use language to add meaning to the speech? What phrase did the use? Was their metaphor, alliteration, antithesis? You also may discuss any verbal delivery in this section.
Fourth Paragraph: In this paragraph analyze the NON-VERBAL DELIVERY. It is important to weave in terms from our textbook and lecture in your assessment. This means use the terms from our discussion of non-verbal behavior. This is the place to discuss: What nonverbal communication was used . Elements of non-verbal include: paralanguage (vocalics such as rate, volume, pitch), gestures, movements, eye contact, posture, dress, etc.
Fifth Paragraph: This paragraph should be your final throught. As with in a closing of a speech, you will want to provide:
Signal your closing with signposts such as “In Summary”, “Finally”, “In Review”, “In Conclusion”, etc.
Review your main points
End with a strong closing thought
