Visual Rhetoric Essay edit

Emanuel,
I liked that you have chosen a film; however, when analyzing a film, it can become very tricky. First off, you kept saying visual rhetoric. There is no visual rhetoric here because this is a film you need to be looking at cinematography (camera angles, camera movements, sound effects, lighting, directing, acting, visual effects, etc.). Secondly, the introduction should provide a short overview/synopsis of the film that makes sense to people who haven’t seen it. I have not seen this movie and you give me this, “The film delves into the attempt of Arthur, a half-breed of a human being on land and a human being bred in the ocean, to unite land and ocean but his half-brother, who is the king of Atlantis (the ocean), opposes him. Instead, he mobilizes a military to wage war against human beings on land and wipe them out (Wan).” So, the rest of your essay is misleading because I think you will be discussing something that pertains to this, but it does not. Then you issue three themes that the film explores, but you do not go into detail as to why you believe the direct wanted to show these themes. Furthermore, you neglected to give the purpose or the meaning behind the telling of this film. Just because the film has these themes there is something else behind them. Which lead to the third point, the thesis statement states the author’s main point about the film. What is the main point of the film? You need one point. Fourth, each body paragraph focuses on one point of analysis, typically a performance or a cinematic technique (sound, camera movement, editing). The topic of each body paragraph is clearly indicated in a topic sentence. The body paragraphs follow a logical organization. You need to find an overall connection throughout your essay. Right now, I cannot follow your essay because it does not tell the reader about the film just describe scenes that has no connection throughout. Thus, the reason why you need to director’s message behind making this film. You will need to take a step back and re-watch the movie and think about these things:

What elements did the film use to make a point? Moreover, why did the film use these elements? Students will have to watch a film and take detailed notes identifying these elements:
The period of the film. The period is the film’s place in time. Was it filmed in the past, present, or future? Why do you think the film choose this period?
The duration of the film. Consider how long the time passes from the start of the film to the end of the film. (Think about this in terms of the film itself, how does it move, and not by the screen time).
The location of the film. Where does the film take place (city, country, in space, etc.)? How effective was the location of the film to the audience?
The level of conflict in the film. The conflict refers to the struggle a character may have. Is it against nature, time, life, himself or herself, is it supernatural, etc.
The type of film. Is it a drama, comedy, romance, horror, sci-fi, etc.
The main characters. What qualities did the characters have that help to make the film’s point?
The crisis of the film. The crisis is the problem that usually brings the character into action. Is this crisis supposed to scare, inspire, instruct, or entertain the audience?
The climax of the film. The climax is the big moment near the end of a film where the crisis reaches its highest moment. How effective was the climax?
The resolution of the film. This is the ending where the consequences of all previous actions have their final effect. How effective was the resolution? Does it leave the audience satisfied or lost?
The main idea of the film. What is the film trying to say? (By using all of the elements in the previous steps and analyzing, why these elements were used it is now possible to discover the main idea ‘thesis’ of the film).
